November News

We were both shocked and disappointed to hear that East Coast Community Healthcare have had no alternative but to take the decision to close the inpatient beds at Patrick Stead Hospital due to staff shortages from 2nd November 2014 through to March 2015.  The hospital will remain open for all outpatient services and for day cases, such as blood transfusions, wound care and intravenous therapy.  Patients from Beccles and Southwold who require day case treatment will be offered it at Patrick Stead, but patients from Halesworth and the surrounding area, who require a community inpatient bed, will be instead offered Beccles or Southwold hospital.  This will be a huge loss to local patients who require overnight stays during the winter period, but it is only a temporary measure, and ECCH are looking to recruit more staff over this period, and are determined to re-open the inpatient beds in March 2015.  The League of Friends, as well as Halesworth Health and Cutlers Hill Surgery are all very supportive of the Patrick Stead Community Hospital and are in close contact with ECCH, and the Great Yarmouth and Waveney Clinical Commissioning Group and monitoring the situation closely to ensure that patient care is as good as possible under these interim arrangements. The League has just agreed to, and have ordered some new reclining chairs, armchairs and kidney tables, totalling almost £10,000 for the wards.  These will be used in the interim period by patients using the day care services, and will be in place for the re-opening of inpatient beds next March.  Members have also agreed to the purchase of a commercial dishwasher for upstairs, to replace the original which has been condemned, a vital signs monitor for the outpatients and 4 Romachair Commodes that are MRSA resistant.

Thank you to Bryan Samain for his kind donation, following the success of his autobiographical memoir.  Bryan is making various donations to Suffolk charities and good causes from the proceeds.  His book, entitled ‘Adventures Unforseen’ can be purchased at Halesworth Bookshop.  We have received donations from Ann Green Second hand bookshop and Mr D Gilder, a donation in memory of Mr D Barrell, and a legacy from Miss G Salway.  Also, we have received a donation in memory of Mrs P Northover, for the Rayner Green Resource Centre.  Sincere thanks for all of these donations.

Woolnoughs Funeral Services are running a Christmas Shopping event on Saturday 8th November from 11.00am – 4.00pm in St Mary’s Church Hall, as a fundraiser for the League of Friends.  There will be craft stalls and refreshments, so do come along and support us for an early start on your Christmas Shopping.  Patricia Rush was the lead in organising this event, and we were very sad to learn that she passed away last month.  Patricia was a regular helper at our fundraising events and was a keen supporter of the League of Friends.  Our thoughts are with her family and friends at this very sad time.

We will be running a cake stall and tombola in the Thoroughfare on Saturday 6th December 2014 from 9.00am; we look forward to seeing you then.

Our AGM is on Wednesday 10th December at 7.00pm, everyone very welcome; please join us to hear what we have been up to this year.  Please note that this will be held in the United Reformed Church, as will all our full members meetings until the inpatients is re-opened in March.
