Professor Sir Patrick Bateson

It is with great sadness that we record the death of our Patron, Professor Sir Patrick Bateson who died in August 2017.

Sir Patrick was a distinguished academic and pioneering scientist who developed the discipline of ethology – the scientific and objective study of animal behaviour especially under natural conditions. In addition to his academic posts he was a Fellow of The Royal Society and President of The Royal Zoological Society of London. Upon stepping down as Provost of King’s College Cambridge he came to live in his wife‘s family home in Halesworth and took a great interest in the town, its people and development.

He was very supportive of the aims and objectives of the charity and continued to show a great interest in our work even when his health was declining. His achievements in the scientific world are comparable with those of the other notable resident of Halesworth, Sir William Hooker
